A local court of Aligarh recently acquitted two accused, booked for the 2015 murder of a 23-year-old student of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) inside the institute’s campus, for want of evidence. The deceased was a final-year student of Bachelor of Social Work (BSW).

The government counsel in Aligarh, Chaman Lal Sharma, said the local court of Aligarh has recently acquitted Ashutosh Mishra and Shadab in the murder of Alamgir for want of evidence. “Prime witnesses had turned hostile in the case. We would decide, later, whether to file an appeal against the judgment,” Sharma.

According to the prosecution, the case dates back to September 18, 2015 when a motorcyclist shot dead Alamgir, a native of Saharanpur, near the computer centre inside the AMU campus. The student was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Irked by the murder, the students of AMU had staged protests and gathered outside the hospital. The students initially did not allow the police to enter the hospital and demanded immediate arrest of the accused. After long persuasion, the students allowed the police to enter the hospital.

On the deceased’s brother, Jahangir Alam’s complaint, an FIR was lodged against four former AMU students — Shadab, Rehan, Muneer Alam and Ashutosh Mishra. Mishra was lodged in jail in a criminal case when the murder took place.

The police had said the murder was a fallout of a dispute between Alamgir and Mishra. The accused had reportedly entered into altercations with Alamgir several times in the past.

The protests continued at the campus for several days following which the education of the students started getting affected. Then Vice-Chancellor of AMU, Zameer Uddin Shah, had requested the state government to recommend a CBI inquiry into Alamgir’s murder.

However, Aligarh police continued with the investigation and filed a chargesheet against all the four accused.

In November 2022, Muneer died in a Varanasi jail, where he was lodged, due to medical complications while the local court had earlier in March 2018 acquitted Rehan in the murder case.
