Two heavily drunk constables of the Government Railway Police (GRP),who were on escort duty in the Delhi-bound Satyagrah Express, were arrested early on Monday for allegedly beating and robbing passengers of cash.
The policemen were taken in custody after the train arrived at Sitapur railway station and were sent to jail.
Station Officer at Sitapur GRP police station Vinod Kumar Mishra said constables Karamvir and Ratnesh Pathak, who are posted at Budhwal GRP outpost in Barabanki, had boarded the train at Budhwal station for escort duty till Bareilly station.
As the train left Barabanki station, the constables entered the sleeper coach (S-3) late evening and asked the passengers to show their tickets, the passengers are learnt to have told Mishra. They also said the constables were heavily drunk,he added.
When the passengers objected that the travelling ticket examiner had already checked their tickets, the policemen allegedly asked them to give them cash or they will be pushed off the moving train. The SO also said the passengers alleged that the policemen snatched money from some of them at gunpoint, assaulting those who refused to do so.
The passengers complained to the GRP police station about the constables after the train arrived at Sitapur around 11.30 pm. A case was registered against the GRP constables and both were sent to jail after they were produced in court,Mishra added.
