As many as 2.63 lakh cases were pending in the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court till October 2012.
The information was given by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Azam Khan in reply to a question by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Suresh Kumar Khanna during question hour in the state Assembly on Monday.
The total pendency including appeals,writs till October 2012 is 2,63,697 at Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, Khan stated. The minister also informed the House that setting up another bench of the high court in western Uttar Pradesh is the discretion of the central government. Already letters have been sent to the Centre in this regard. The then Chief Ministers Mulayam Singh had writen a letter on 7 November 1994 and Mayawati wrote on 5 September 1995 in this regard, he claimed.
BSPs Dharam Pal Singh stated that as per Jaswant Singh Commission report,Agra has been identified for setting up another bench of the High Court. It was there in Agra before Independence, he stated. However,Khan Azam replied that even his home district Rampur had a High Court in pre-Independence days.
BJPs Dr Radhamohan Aggrawal stated that even Tamil Nadu has two benches at Chennai and Madurai. Later,Khan assured the House that another letter will be written to the Centre as per the provision of the law for setting up another bench of High Court in the state.
