1 killed, nearly 20 injured as truck ploughs into wedding procession in UP’s Amroha

(Representational) A man died and around 20 other people sustained injuries when a truck carrying musical instruments for a disc jockey (DJ) ploughed into a wedding procession at Soharka village in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district Sunday evening.
The deceased has been identified as Balkar Kumar, 27, a resident of Hathiakheda village from where the procession was taken out. It was headed to the house of one Mahendra Singh whose daughter was getting married.
According to the police, the truck was part of the procession and when it reached near the bride’s house, the driver got down from the vehicle. However, an unidentified man soon got into the driver’s seat and started the truck. The vehicle then raced ahead, mowing down Balkar and others, most of whom were children and women.
Officers said Balkar died while being rushed to a hospital while others who sustained injuries were admitted to the government hospital in Hasanpur.
Sushil Kumar Verma, in-charge of Hasanpur police station, said, “A majority of the male members in the procession were in an inebriated state and one among them caused the accident. We have lodged an FIR against the unidentified man. No arrest has been made yet.”
