An altercation between a group of kanwarias and a tea stall vendor blew up into a riot in Bareilly town last night,in which one man was killed and more than 20,including SP (City) Shiv Sagar Singh,were injured.
Curfew was imposed,but the city remained tense,and groups exchanged brickbats in some areas on Monday. The government dispatched Jagmohan Yadav,Additional Director General of Law and Order,to supervise the operations.
The deceased was identified as Imran of Baradari who died of a bullet injury during the clash.
Bareilly Zone IG Devendra Singh Chauhan said they were awaiting his autopsy report to know if Imran died from police bullet or by firing by someone in the clashing mobs.
Chauhan said that two groups exchanged fire during the rioting and the police had to fire in the air to disperse them.
Bareilly DM Manish Chauhan said the violence started in Shahbad area and soon spread to other localities. The clashing groups indulged in brick-batting,arson and firing in Baradari,City Kotwali area,Sahmatganj and Jogi Nawada areas.
The SP (City),who reached Baradari area,was trapped between two groups and suffered injuries in the brick-batting,he said.
The mobs torched a vegetable and fruit market,about half-a-dozen shops and damaged over 20 vehicles.
On Monday morning,two groups engaged in brick-batting in Aonla area,which is a rural area free from curfew. The police rushed to the area and used cane-charge to disperse the people.
