To enhance safety of women the district administration in Ghaziabad will soon introduce radio taxis,on the lines of those that operate in Delhi.

Senior district officials said the plan will be finalised by next week, after which companies will be able to get licences from the administration.

Sanjay Mathur,Regional Transport Manager, said,“The state government has approved the proposal and there are no hurdles in the way of implementing the project now. It is important from the point of view of security of women especially those travelling at night.”

According to the plan drawn up by the Transport department, the initial 2.5 km will be charged at Rs 50 per km,after which the cost will be Rs 20 per km.

“The waiting charge has been fixed at Rs 50 per hour. Companies can charge lower than this, but not higher,” a senior official said.

Officials said all radio taxis services in Ghaziabad will have to install GPS systems in their vehicles. “We expect that the services will be used by people more at night. The GPS and other safety devices will be made mandatory on all

vehicles. These taxis will be a marked improvement from autorickshaws, shared taxis and buses,” a senior official said.

Mathur said these radio cabs will not have an intercity permit. “They are intended only for plying within Ghaziabad limits. They will not have permission to enter Delhi. This is something we will look at later,” he said.
