Most want us to form govt,will decide after weekend sabhas: AAP
Both the Congress and BJP have offered the AAP support from outside.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) plans to hold 272 jan sabhas on Saturday and Sunday to ascertain if the “people of Delhi” want the party to form a minority government.
AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal,in a letter addressed to Delhi residents,spoke of the party’s dharam sankat over taking support from other parties and staking claim to form the government. Party sources said responses received until Friday via messages,online and voice messaging indicate that a “great majority” want the AAP to form the government.
Party spokesperson Manish Sisodia said a final decision would be taken after taking into account the “opinion of people” at the jan sabhas. “It is true that the people who have responded want us to form the government. Our stand has always been that if people so wish,we will take that step. However,a final call will be taken after the jan sabhas,” he said.
Several AAP MLAs said that they had been asking people to either vote online or send messages in response to Kejriwal’s letter but the emphasis now was on the jan sabhas planned over the weekend.
“At the jan sabhas,there will be an open debate on the merits and demerits of forming a government in Delhi,after which the decision of the people will be sought. In my interaction with people,some have expressed reservations,but many think we should take support and form a government,” Surender Singh,elected from Delhi Cantonment,said.
Sources said the party leadership was reluctant to base its decision solely on the basis of messages and online feedback,fearing that these were “susceptible to manipulation”.
“The jan sabhas will provide direct people-to-people contact,which will give the clearest picture. Some candidates are conducting jan sabhas today (Friday) itself. There is a chance,however small,that there are people with vested interests sending messages from different numbers and so on. If Delhi does want us to form the government,we will,” an AAP leader said.
Both the Congress and BJP have offered the AAP support from outside. But after Kejriwal shot off letters to Sonia Gandhi and Rajnath Singh,asking them their opinion on 18 issues,only the Congress responded.
In its reply,the Congress said 16 of the 18 points were purely administrative in nature,but on two issues —Jan Lokpal and full statehood for Delhi — it offered support.
The Congress said it was offering support from outside only because it could not ally with the BJP,which .won 32 seats,and did not want Delhi to face a re-election.
