Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday evening invited Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal for discussions on Saturday for government formation.

The invitation came shortly after BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan declined to form the government, saying that his party did not have a majority, despite being the single-largest party. In the recent elections, the BJP has won 32 seats, followed by the AAP with 28.The incumbent Congress won a meagre eight seats.

“The Lt-Governor has called Arvind Kejriwal for talks,as is the procedure. The meeting will take place at 10.30 am on Saturday. As leader of the Aam Aadmi Party,Arvindji will be asked if he wants to stake claim to form the government,” an AAP leader said.

In the days after December 8,both the BJP and the AAP have urged each other to form the government. While the BJP quoted Congress leaders as saying they would support the AAP,the AAP leadership hit back saying the BJP and Congress should come together to form the government,“owing to a similar kind of politics”.

A senior AAP member said,“We will not accept or give support to any other party, and we will not form the government as we do not have the mandate. We are prepared for a re-election. If it comes to that,we are sure that AAP will get a majority.”

Meanwhile, sources said the Congress would submit a letter of support to the AAP directly to the L-G. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi also told reporters that support for the AAP “was under consideration”.
