The police on Saturday arrested a 22-year-old man for allegedly trying to force acid down the throat of woman after she called off their marriage. The incident occurred at the Gorai jetty on Saturday evening.
According to the Gorai police, the accused,Hitendra Sakpal,is a resident of the Kajupada area in Borivali. He was in a relationship with the victim for around a year. The 18-year-old victim lives in the same area and they had recently obtained their parents consent for marriage. However,Sakpal was prone to substance abuse, which the victim did not approve of. When he refused to change his ways, she called off their marriage last month. Sakpal had been calling and trying to meet her since then, the police said.
On Saturday, the victim agreed to meet Sakpal once, and he picked her up after she left from the college where she studies. They then went to the Gorai jetty to talk about their relationship, and when the victim stuck to her stand,a heated argument ensued. Sakpal pulled out a bottle containing acid from his pocket and tried to force it down her throat. However, the victim fought back and the bottle fell to the ground. She suffered burns to her mouth and is out of danger, said Senior Inspector Deepak Bagwe.
The sound of the scuffle and the victims screams attracted the attention of other people at the jetty, including constables patrolling the area. They overpowered Sakpal and took him to the police station, while the victim was rushed to Bhagwati hospital in Borivali.
