Following in Delhi’s footsteps, the Gurgaon administration has decided to set up prepaid auto-rickshaw booths to streamline the fares of non-metered auto-rickshaws plying in the city.

The move was announced keeping in mind the lack of public transportation in Gurgaon,a major concern among the residents and commuters for several years.

Beginning January, the first phase of the scheme will see prepaid booths being set up. In the second phase, meters will be installed in auto-rickshaws.

While making the announcement,Deputy Commissioner (Gurgaon) Shekhar Vidyarthi also made public a new set of plans in a meeting this week. “Four booths will be established in the pilot phase — one each at the Sikanderpur Metro station and HUDA City Centre Metro station,Gurgaon’s main bus stand and the Railway station. All CNG auto-rickshaws will come under this project,” Vidyarthi told Newsline.

The decision comes in the wake of numerous complaints filed by commuters against the auto-rickshaws in Gurgaon.

“Police as well as the administration has received many complaints from commuters who have charged abnormally high rates, especially at night. Auto-rickshaws have also added to rush hour jams in Gurgaon,” Vidyarthi said

The district administration has set up a three-member committee comprising Sub-Divisional Magistrate (North) Satender Duhan,Road Transport Authority (RTA) secretary Dalbir Singh and ACP (traffic) Vishnu Dayal.

“This committee will work out all modalities of prepaid auto fares… after studying the Delhi model and negotiations with auto unions. Prepaid fares are yet to be worked out. The booths will be monitored by police,” Duhan said.

The committee will submit its report by the end of December. “Delhi’s RTA will also be consulted as to understand their model,” an administration official said.

Residents in Gurgaon welcomed the move. “Until now, commuters had to take auto-rickshaws at high rates. With this initiative, there will be a fixed rate for every location,” Shivani Malik,a resident of Sushant Lok – I,said.
