‘Drug addict’ held for attack on US woman

The Govt Railway Police finally nabbed the suspect from Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

After a week-long pursuit of a phone snatcher,who allegedly robbed and also injured an American woman with a blade inside a local train on Western Railway,the Government Railway Police (GRP) Sunday finally nabbed the suspect from Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

DCP (Western Railway) B N Shirsat said Rajkumar Somnath Tiwari,31,had entered the first-class ladies compartment at 4.30 pm on August 18 from Marine Lines station after noticing that the woman was travelling alone in the compartment. He assaulted the woman after she resisted in parting with her iPhone and jumped off at Charni Road station,said Shirsat.

The victim,Michel Mark,28,who works with an NGO,was heading towards her home in Goregaon.

Senior Police Inspector (Crime Branch) D D Waghmare said Tiwari had previously been booked for stealing a bag and a mobile phone and for a chain snatching. “He has been recommended for externment from the district by Central Railway twice,” Waghmare said.

“Tiwari has been remanded in custody till August 30,” said Waghmare.

Shirsat said Tiwari sold the phone to a drug peddler named Behru for Rs 300 and immediately went to Chor Bazaar to buy new clothes. “He suffered injuries on the left arm and waist when he tried to jump off the train,” Shirsat said.

The drug peddler,who is in her late twenties,sells drugs near Masjid Bunder station and Tiwari was a frequent customer,said police.

“The victim will come to the police station in few days,” added Shirsat.

Tiwari had allegedly slashed the women with a blade,leaving her injured in the train. The victim was treated at Mumbai Central’s Nair hospital and received four stitches on her forearm.
