The city police have registered a case of rape against an unidentified person after a 17-year-old girl, who had become pregnant, died during treatment in hospital last month. She had already lost her eight-month-old foetus.

The girl was brought to Sassoon General Hospital last month after she was found unconscious in her home. According to the police, the family was unaware of her condition till the time doctors in the hospital ascertained the pregnancy. The family is also clueless about who could be the father of the unborn child. Senior police inspector of Samarth Police Station G V Nikam said they had collected the viscera and blood samples of the girl to determine the cause of death.

According to the police, the girl,a resident of Nana Peth, was a school dropout and used to stay with her father, grandmother, bother and a sister. The father is a dailywager.

“The father told us that on May 23,2013,he found her lying unconscious in the house when he returned home for lunch. The girl was taken to Sassoon hospital where doctors informed the family that she was eight months pregnant. The family was shocked to hear the news. Meanwhile, the doctors started to treat her. After a few days, they informed the father that the foetus was dead and that a Caesarean section was carried out on the girl to remove the foetus. On May 27,the girl died in the hospital,” said Nikam.

Following the death, when the police had approached the father,he reportedly told them that his daughter was 21 years old. Nikam said the father also did not know if she was having any affair. Ruling out the possibility of an attempt to suicide in the case,he said though the girl was found unconscious at her home, the postmortem showed no sign of poison in the body.

Meanwhile, the police independently approached the girl’s school and obtained a school leaving certificate, according to which the girl’s age was found to be 17 years and 2 months.

“Following this,we registered an offence against an unidentified person under Section 376 of the IPC for rape,” said Nikam. “We have detained a few persons based on our interrogation of the family and acquaintances. But we have not come to any conclusion about the perpetrator,” he added.
