The JSW group will start work on its proposed steel plant at Salboni in West Midnapore district once the problem of sourcing iron ore is sorted out. This was revealed on Monday by Sajjan Jindal,vice-chairman and MD of JSW.

It was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself who asked Jindal at the end of her speech at the inaugural session of the Bengal Leads summit about the start of his project. “Sajjan Jindal, your problem of ceiling excess land has been resolved. Now when are you going to start your project?’’ Banerjee asked him in plain Bengali.

To this,Jindal quickly said he would do it soon.

Jindal said he could not give specific time frame, though. “Sourcing iron ore is a major problem. We were asked to source it from the National Mineral Development Corporation but it is not viable for us. We want it from Bihar and Jharkhand. Bengal CM and industry minister assured me they would take up the matter with the Centre. I believe they are working on a national iron ore policy,’’ Jindal said.
