State Advocate General (AG) Bimal Chatterjee has come under fire from a womens rights body for the sexist remark he made in the Calcutta High Court.
On June 4,Chatterjee,while replying to a plea in which the State Election Commission had presented its demands for the next months panchayat elections, said the poll panel was behaving like a beautiful lady asking for this and that. It is making arbitrary and whimsical desires.
Maitree, which is a womens rights network of 60 organisations and individual activists based in the state,in a statement, termed the AGs comments as sexist and stereotyping women.
While demanding a public apology from Chatterjee, the network said that the AG did not make legal arguments and distracted from key political issues.
It said the AG has joined a long list of public figures in the country who have made denigrating comments about women, which go against the grain of equality and justice.
