Chief Minister Mamata Banerjees police directorate has issued an order asking officers of women police stations to initiate a special drive to stop eve teasing and visit girls schools to generate awareness regarding crime against women. The state has witnessed a sharp increase in incidents of violence against women recently.
In a landmark move keeping in mind the need to have specialised police units to combat crime against women,the state government has decided to set up 65 women police stations,all to be manned by women,across the districts. 19 of them have already been made operational in some districts.
Director General of Police Naparajit Mukherjee observed that these specialised units are not functioning properly. Therefore,Mukherjee issued a set of guidelines regarding duties and responsibilities for the officers posted at these police stations.
The advisories were given to ensure better service and proper functioning of these stations. In the list of duties and responsibilities Mukherjee stated that profiling has top be done of crime cases against women and the same has to be compiled after taking daily sitrep from District Crime Records Bureau before submitting it to the SP office and regular meetings have to be organised with those coming to the women police stations with their grievances.
He also instructed the officers of women police stations to consult the SP Office and collect details of papers received from Womens Commission.
The officers attached to these police stations have also been ordered to take follow-up action and submot a monthly report with the concerned superintendent of police.
Apart from this,the police authorities have asked the officers of women police stations to arrange awareness programmes in consultation with local self-governing bodies and reputed NGOs. Anti eve-teasing drive at prominent and vulnerable public places on daily basis has to take place and details (of raids) have to be filed,it was ordered.
The officers have also instructed to maintain liaison with District Protection Officer for handling of cases relating to domestic violence. Output of these new police stations has to be assessed and quantified by all units as well as the police directorate on monthly basis,the DG ordered.
