West Bengal: Six school students killed in accident in Rampur

Among the seven injured, six have been referred to Siliguri Medical College.

At least six school students were killed and seven others sustained injuries when the Bolero jeep they were travelling in collided with a truck at Rampur in north Dinajpore’s Chakulia area on Thursday.

The accident happened around 2.30, when primary students of Kishengunj St Xaviers’ School were on their way home in Chakulia on National Highway 34. While five students died on the spot, one succumbed after he was rushed to Kishengunj Medical College.

Among the seven injured, six have been referred to Siliguri Medical College.

Following the accident, the driver and helper of the truck fled the spot. Irate locals, alleging that the police arrived late, damaged a police vehicle and beat up two policemen. They also put up a road blockade. When police tried to disperse them, they started pelting stones on the police. “If they had come sooner, at least two children could have been saved,” said a local.
