Breaking her silence on the arrest of Trinamool Congress (TMC)’s Birbhum district president Anubrata Mondal in the cattle-smuggling case, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday said that she will stand with the party strongman and announced to “start a movement” against alleged excesses of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the CBI.
Addressing a gathering during an Independence Day programme in South Kolkata, Banerjee said, “What has Kesto (Anubrata Mondal) done? Even as he was locked in his house, we still we won the assembly elections last year. The ED and CBI ransacked his house at midnight. If you arrest one Kesto, we will create thousands of them. We will hit the streets from August 16 on the ‘Khela Hobe Divas’. There will be ‘Khela hobe’, again (Let the play start, again).”
On Anubrata’s arrest, she said, “What are they trying to say? That he took money for cows. Why do they send cows from UP and Bihar through Bengal? We will not allow their cows to enter our borders.”
Many TMC leaders thought that CM Banerjee will not stand by Anubrata as she did in TMC heavyweight Partha Chatterjee’s case. The ED had arrested Chatterjee and recovered over Rs 50 crore in cash from his close associate’s Kolkata flats. Chatterjee was removed from the cabinet besides being suspended from the party.
Slamming the BJP, CPI(M) and the Congress, the CM said, “They all are comrades in arms. They have no place in this state. They do not have a place in the country either.”
The West Bengal Police, Banerjee claimed, saved the Jharkhand government from collapsing by arresting three Congress MLA with a huge haul of cash. “They (BJP) would have toppled the Jharkhand government (led by Jharkhand Mukti Morcha). Now they called our officers to Delhi out of revenge. Why is the central government harassing our officers?” she added.
Urging her party supporters to hit the streets, she said, “How many people will be arrested? I will start a ‘jail bharo’ movement. What will you do if they go to my house tomorrow?”
Now, the BJP may conspire against Trinamool MP Abhishek Banerjee and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, she said.
Trashing the opposition’s allegation on TMC-BJP agreement, she said, “I did not go Delhi for a compromise. I went there to demand our state’s money that they took but never returned.”
BJP president Sukanta Majumder claimed that the CM was supporting Anubrata Mondal as she was scared.
CPI(M) state secretary Mohammad Salim alleged that all TMC leaders were thieves with Banerjee as their head. “She is now trying to protect herself,” he claimed.
