West Bengal: Govt announces Rs 2L compensation each for kin of those killed in cracker bursting

The two persons were killed in separate incidents in Kolkata on Sunday night. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

Two days after two persons, including a five-year-old, were killed while bursting firecrackers in Kolkata on Kali Puja and Diwali, the West Bengal government on Tuesday announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of their kin.

The two persons were killed in separate incidents in Kolkata on Sunday night. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

According to police, both the victims had received injuries to their neck and face while bursting tubris (clay flowerpot crackers). The first incident took place in Shilpara area of Behala in south Kolkata where five-year-old Adi Das was killed while bursting crackers with his parents.

In a similar incident, a 40-year-old resident of Kasba area was killed while burning firecrackers. Dip Kumar Koley was lighting a tubri when it exploded accidentally.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to Koley’s two brothers and offered her condolences. She has also spoken to the police about the incident.
