Mamata Banerjee rejigs Cabinet, Babul Supriyo loses Tourism, gets IT instead

A day before embarking on a week-long tour of Dubai and Spain to seek investments for the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday made a minor reshuffle in her Council of Ministers, shifting the portfolio of Minister of State Babul Supriyo from Tourism to Information Technology and Renewable Energy departments.

Another singer-politician Indranil Sen, who is the Minister of State for Technical Education, Training, and Skill Development Department has been given the Independent charge of the Tourism Department. Indranil is also MoS Information and Culture.

The CM has taken away co-operation department from Arup Roy, who will now remain Cabinet Minister of Food Processing Department. The Cooperation Department has now been allotted to Pradip Majumdar, who is already Cabinet Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Department.

Veteran TMC leader and Cabinet Minister Jyotipriya Mullick has been given the additional portfolio of Public Enterprise and Industrial Reconstruction Department apart from the Forest Department.

The portfolio of the Public Enterprise and Industrial Reconstruction Department was held by Biplab Mitra. He will now remain MoS (Consumer Affairs Department).

“The Cabinet reshuffle was approved by the Governor (CV Ananda Bose) last night,” the chief minister said.

Meanwhile, the chief minister announced to make Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district a separate sub-division.

The announcement comes three days after the ruling TMC won the Dhupguri Assembly bypoll, wresting the seat from the BJP. While campaigning for the bypoll, TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee had promised to make Dhupguri a sub-division by the end of September.

Announcing the decision taken at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by her, the chief minister said that some areas of Banarhat will be included in the Dhupguri Sub-Division area.

“Abhishek had promised before the bypolls that Dhupguri would be made a sub-division. The process of creating a separate subdivision has started. I’ll come back and pass the order,” said the CM.

On her Spain tour, the CM said, “We have a three-day business summit in Madrid, which includes meetings with NRIs. There will be two more such meetings in Barcelona and Dubai. We will return on September 23… Spain was the international partner during the Book Fair and we hope that they will partner for the Bengal Global Business Summit in November.”

“I am leaving the country after 5 years because I did not get permission from the Centre all these years despite having multiple invitations,” she added.
