As the festivities in West Bengal are nearing to an end, the BJP has started its preparations for the upcoming Assembly bypolls in three constituencies. While it has decided on the candidates for Karimpur and Kharagpur Sadar seats, it is yet to do so for the Kaliaganj Assembly constituency.

Last week, an internal meeting was held to finalise the names of its candidates for Kharagpur Sadar, Karimpur and Kaliaganj Assembly seats, which would go to bypoll on November 25. The names for Karimpur and Kharagpur Sadar seats were sent to the party’s central leadership to take a final call.

Sources in the BJP said the party has sent the name of its state vice-president Joy Prakash Majumdar as its candidate for Karimpur seat, while Kharagpur town president Premchand Jha’s name has been considered for the Sadar seat. Meanwhile, the party is yet to take a decision on its candidates for the Kaliaganj seat.

When asked, Majumdar denied commenting on his shortlisting as the Karimpur candidate. “I cannot comment on me being a possible candidate for the upcoming bypolls. The names of the party candidates for elections are finalised and approved by our central parliamentary committee. So, it will be premature to comment on it. I am a worker of the party and will shoulder whatever responsibility is given to me by the central leadership,” he said.

According to state BJP general secretary Pratap Banerjee, names of its candidates will be announced by the central committee in the next two to three days. “We have sent the names of the possible candidates to our central leadership. We are awaiting its approval. Once Bhaidooj ends (Tuesday), our workers will start preparations for the bypolls. Once the candidates are announced, poll campaigning will begin. So far, the party has made three in-charges for the three Assembly constituencies going to bypoll,” Banerjee said.

Ruling TMC is yet to announce its candidates for the bypolls.  Sources said the Congress and Left Front are heading towards an electoral understanding for the bypolls. However the final decision has not been taken yet.

The bypoll to the Kharagpur Sadar seat in West Midnapore district was necessitated after sitting MLA and West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh won the Lok Sabha polls from Midnapore Parliamentary constituency. Similarly, the bypoll to Karimpur seat in Nadia district was necessitated after TMC leader Mahua Moitra resigned as an MLA after winning the Lok Sabha election from Krishnanagar Parliamentary seat. The bypoll to the Kaliaganj seat in North Dinajpur district was necessitated after four-time Congress MLA Pramatha Nath Ray died in May this year.
