Questioning of businessman and former Mohun Bagan secretary Balaram Chowdhury in connection with the murder of a 26-year-old software engineer,Junior Mirdha, has made the parents of the deceased hopeful that the case would be cracked soon.

While Chowdhury denies he was summoned to the CID office, officials have confirmed that he was called for questioning.

“We would have been dead following the shock of the death of our only son. But we want to live on,to see the end of this case and the culprits getting punished,” said Sweta,Junior’s mother.

According to the parents,Junior was involved with Priyanka, the daughter-in-law of Chowdhury.

The two had met through a social networking site. “They had known each other for about three years. Moon (Priyanka’s pet name) used to come to our place frequently. She used to spend a lot of time here,” said Sweta,a resident of Jagrata Palli,Belgharia on the outskirts of Kolkata.

“Initially,we had no idea that she was married. When it was disclosed,I asked her to discontinue seeing my son but she couldn’t.” Contract killers are alleged to have been hired to eliminate Junior on July 12 last year. When Junior’s body was found by the side of Belghoria Expressway,it was initially thought to be a hit-and-run case. But the autopsy revealed a bullet in his back.

Sweta also alleged that one of Priyanka Chowdhury’s brothers-in-law was also involved in the conspiracy to eliminate Junior.

Junior’s father Samaresh Mridha (57) said: “I had asked both of them to discontinue this relationship, but Priyanka said she would divorce her husband and marry my son. I did not press too much fearing she might take some adverse steps.” Samaresh Mridha, who will retire next year, said he had pinned a lot of hope on his meritorious son. “All our dreams have been shattered. We had built a castle of dreams around my son. If they were so unhappy with him, they should have talked to us or my son before taking this step,” he said.

Sweta said there had been several attempts to kill her son. “On a couple of occasions,my son had told me that he was nearly run down by a car when he was coming out of his office in Dalhousie.”

On the fateful night,Junior had hurried out on his bike to meet Priyanka after returning from office. “I had asked him where he was going without having his food, and he said Priyanka wanted to meet him for sometime and also said he would return and have food,” Sweta said.

CID officials, meanwhile, confirmed that Chowdhury was called to the CID headquarters at Bhawani Bhawan and interrogated on Monday. “Yes,we called him (Chowdhury) for interrogation as one of his family members was allegedly involved in the murder. But we will not divulge the outcome to the media. We will do it only to the court of law,” IG II,CID Adhir Sharma told The Indian Express.

Chowdhury, however, said: “I went to Salt Lake in the morning, then dropped in at a doctor’s chamber and returned to my office. Nothing happened in between.”
