West Bengal: Teen girl found dead in pond, kin allege rape & murder; one arrested

A 17-year-old girl was found dead in a pond in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Friday morning, a day after she went missing. Her family alleged that she was raped before being murdered, police said.
The police said they have arrested a suspect, identified as Javed Akhtar, whom the victim knew. The girl had gone missing from her way to tuition classes on Thursday, it is learnt.

“We have initiated investigation into the matter and one person has been arrested. It is too early to say more on the case,” a senior police officer said.
Asked about the family’s claim that the girl had been raped, he said, “It is a matter of probe. A case has been lodged in this connection.”

The protesters pelted the police with bricks, and this led to a lathicharge. Several people were detained from the spot and a large number of police personnel were deployed in the area.
On hearing about the incident, Kaliaganj MLA Soumen Roy, Trinamool Congress’s Uttar Dinajpur district president Kanailal Aggarwal and other party leaders went to the area and spoke to the family.
Kanailal said, “Like the residents, we too are angry. We have come here on the instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. We want the culprits to be punished severely. The police have been asked to nab those involved in the crime.”
Also, a team of MLAs Joyel Murmu, Chinmoy Deb Barman and Satyendra Nath Roy visited the village.
Questioning the law and order situation in the state, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari said in a Twitter post, “Sorry state of Law & Order situation in WB as @WBPolice is busy with making security arrangements for ‘Bhaipo’s Nabajowar’. Unfortunately the common people; especially women are paying the price. The perpetrators are getting emboldened due to the inaction of the state government.”
