A 60-year-old farmer allegedly drank pesticide at Somoshpur village under Hemtabad police station in North Dinajpur district two days ago. Samiruddin Ahmed was admitted to Raigunj District Hospital and died on Sunday.

In another incident in Katoa in Burdwan,Luthfur Bibi, wife of a small-time peasant Azizul Khan, set herself on fire following a family tension rooted in Khan’s inability to pay debt. “They farmed on seven bighas of land — one bigha of their own and six bighas on lease. Azizul could not recover the amount from the sale of his last produce. “Azizul wanted the children to stop studying and help in earning for the family. His wife Luthfur,on the other hand, wanted the children to continue with studies,” said a neighbour. The couple had four children – three boys and one girl.
