Agricultural Marketing Minister Arup Roy,who has been accused of being involved in the murder of a Trinamool activist,has refuted the allegations and said they were meant to malign him.
Protima Dutta had moved Calcutta High Court seeking a CBI inquiry into the killing of her husband,Trinamool leader Tapan Dutta. She had alleged that the CID did not probe the case properly because a minister was involved. The court on Wednesday directed the state to file an affidavit on Protima’s petition.
Roy said that Protima’s writ petition was filed to malign him,but he had confidence in the judiciary.
The minister said he had demanded a CID probe after the killing of Tapan on May 6,2011,when the Left Front government was in power.
Arguing that there was no serious allegation against him,Roy said,“It was alleged in the chargesheet that Trinamool leaders were annoyed with Tapan Dutta for his movement against filling up of wetlands.” Roy questioned the CID’s conclusion. “There was no statement from any witness. The CID deleted our names from the supplementary chargesheet,” he said.
The first chargesheet filed on August 30,2011,stated,“There was a long-standing enmity among the deceased (Tapan Dutta) and some TMC leaders of the area over the issue of ash filling of Suti canal and Haral canal and other two canals for Anmol South City Project — a joint collaboration with WB Govt. The deceased formed an organisation named Jalabhumi Bachao Committee to prevent the filling up of ponds. The TMC leaders became exasperated upon the deceased over the issue. They tried to influence the deceased by money and others means but the deceased remained strong. Then the group formed a syndicate in favour of ash filling by the Anmol Group. The deceased brought the matter before the higher authority of his party.”
The supplementary chargesheet filed on September 26,2011,stated there was no evidence against the persons named in the first chargesheet — Govinda Hazra,Kalyan Ghosh,Arup Roy,Amit Palchoudhury,Babu Mondal Panchu Begani,Laksmi Haldar and Paritosh Bar.
