Small groups of tribal agitators disrupted train services in a few districts during a 12-hour bandh called by Purulia-Bankura based Jharkhand Disam Party (JDP) on Monday to protest against the alleged police atrocities in Lalgarh.
Over two dozen people blocked railway tracks and NH-2 for several hours at five points, leading to disruption in the Howrah-Asansol and Howrah-Rampurhat divisions. Ten long-distance trains, including Sealdah and Howrah-bound Rajdhani Express, were held up for hours between Asansol and Burdwan.
The JDP was formed nearly six months ago to resist police action in Lalgarh. It has links with the Chhatradhar Mahato-led Peoples Committee against Police Atrocities, and has presence in Hooghly,West Midnapore,Bankura,Purulia and Burdwan.
On Monday, its supporters blocked railway tracks in Gurap,Sibaichandi,Jougram,Pallaroad,Debipur,Belmuri and Rasulpur. The blockade started from 6 am and continued till 1 pm. Local police managed to reach the spots only after three hours of blockade, but still failed to remove the blockades. Train services resumed only after the agitators quit the railway tracks on their own.
State Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen said he had no information about the incidents till 6 pm. I will ask for a report, said Sen.
