Three people were killed and two injured after a speeding car overturned in Eco Park area of New Town on the eastern fringes of Kolkata in the early hours of Tuesday.

As per police, the car was at a breakneck speed and the driver lost control, while taking a U-turn, due to which it rammed into a Metro railway pillar before turning turtle.

Five men, identified as Sarbajit Singh, Mohit Jain, Nishid Jawar, Kaushal Jawar and Mayank Jawar — all residents of Salt lake and Kolkata — were inside the vehicle. Nishid, Kaushal and Mayank, who were seated at the back of the car, died, while Mohit — apparently driving the vehicle — and Sarbajit are in critical condition at a private hospital.

“The incident took place around 5:15 am when the Honda City with a West Bengal registration number -WB088567 – was coming from Narkelbagan side at a high speed and dashed a Metro pillar before overturning, while taking a U-turn,” said a senior officer of Bidhannagar police commissionerate, adding the car was heading towards airport.

According to police they were returning from a party in New Town.

Mohit had to be rescued by using a gas cutter, said another officer.

As per police, Nishid, Kaushal and Mayank were shifted to Salt Lake Sub Divisional Hospital where they succumbed to injuries, while the other two were taken to Charnock Hospital.

A forensic team also reached the spot and examined the mangled remains of the car. Maximum damage was received on the front portion of the car.

“The accident took place due to high pick-up speed. The car first tried to apply break, but rammed into the Metro piller. We have collected samples and investigation is on,” said a forensic official.

New Town police have lodged a case of rash driving.

The accident was first noticed by a patrolling team of New Town police station.
