Two persons were arrested by police on Saturday for planting a landmine at Jamboni area in West Midnapore district,police sources said.

Jhargram: Two persons were arrested by police on Saturday for planting a landmine at Jamboni area in West Midnapore district,police sources said. A landmine was planted in Jamboni area on Bhatur to Amlatola road near the Jharkhand border on Friday,sources said. The two arrested are both residents of Jamboni,sources said,adding one of them had been earlier arrested for involvement in Maoist activities.

Woman killed in road accident

Asansol: A woman was killed and another critically injured in a road accident on Saturday in Burdwan district,leading to violent protests by locals. Police said Kusum Nuniya (40) died on the spot while Asha Devi (38) was admitted to a local hospital in a critical condition after a tourist bus hit them in Kalipahari area. Locals staged a protest on the road demanding improvement in the traffic condition. As the mob began to clash with the police by throwing brickbats,RAF services were pressed to bring the situation in control,police said.

Youth killed by friend over money

Krishnagar: A youth was killed by his friend at Kalyani Nabapally,police sources said on Saturday. Uttam Barui (28) of Natunpally under Kalyani Police Station area was killed by his friend Manab Mukherjee Friday night after he had protested against using club funds for drinking alcohol. Nabankur club had won Rs 3,000 in a Football tournament on August 15. A decision was taken to spend the money in a club picnic. But Manab and a few other members spent a part of the money on alcohol. A mob ransacked Manab’s house and set it on fire.

Kalyani Metro work to begin soon: Hakim

Nadia: Municipal and Urban Development Affair Minister Firhad Hakim said on Saturday the survey work for Kalyani Metro is finished. The work will start soon,he said while laying the foundation of the Kalyani Bus Terminus. He said the state government has a special eye for the development of Kalyani and Kanchrapara. Firhad has ordered the urban development department to advertise with a view to allot the land of Kalyani industrial belt amongst interested industrialists. He,in reply to a question,said that the land transfer-related problems in Kalyani and Salt lake would be solved within the next three months.

Bengal man caught smuggling tortoises

Lucknow: A man hailing from West Bengal was arrested in Jaunpur on Saturday allegedly while smuggling 44 tortoises,police said. On a tip off,the GRP caught Shajhar Ali with the tortoises at Jaunpur railway station,they said.
