The state government has conferred on sub-divisional officers and block developmental officers the power to exercise financial powers of panchayats whose term ends today,said Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee today.
The term of one-third of the panchayats is coming to an end today and we have given financial powers of panchayats to respective SDOs and BDOs of the area till elections are over. But in any case we are much hopeful that the panchayat elections will be held on scheduled time, Mukherjee today said.
He also said the state government is not going to change its stand in the Supreme Court so far as availability of central forces is concerned. We are ready to conduct the elections with the police force that we have.
The Supreme Court has fixed the hearing for the panchayat polls case filed by the State Election Commission,tomorrow. It has sent notices to both the state and the Centre to file affidavits.
Meanwhile,the CPM today took the cases of electoral violence in the villages to various government forums. Left Front delegations today met Governor M K Narayanan,minister for panchayats Subrata Mukherjee,state election commissioner Meera Pandey and Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee and submitted memorandums in this regard.
In another development,Union Home Secretary designate Anil Goswami will meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Writers Building tomorrow. Goswami,who will assume charge on June 30,will first meet a host of officials,including BSF ADG B D Sharma,Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra,Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee and DGP Naparajit Mukherjee.
