Row Legal community had objected to an artist nominated for law institute council
Eminent artist Suvaprasanna, whose name was nominated by the Mamata Banerjee government for the post of member in the academic council of West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS),a law institute, has refused to accept the offer.
The nomination of Suvaprasanna for the academic council of the law institute had created a ruffle with legal community left wondering why an artist was nominated by the government instead of a law expert.
Speaking to The Indian Express from Delhi on Monday,Suvaprasanna said: I dont have any idea about law or legal affairs,so Im not accepting the post in the NUJS.
Admitting that he had received the letter from the NUJS a few days ago about his nomination,Suvaprasanna, considered close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, said that he was never consulted by the state government before recommending his name for the institute. I am already a member of the Railway Amenities Committee and a member of the heritage committee. I understand these subjects, but I dont know anything about the legal matters and have always maintained a distance from it. So I cant not give any advice to the institute either, he said.
However, till date he has not been able to inform the institute about his decision.
Surajit Chandra Mukhopadhyay, registrar of the NUJS,said a letter was sent to Suvaprasanna to get his consent for the post after the state government recommended his name for the post. It is an honarary post, added Mukhopadyay.
Eminent jurist Justice Chittosh Mukherjee was the member of the academic council as the nominee of the state before the expiry of his term on August 23. Following Mukherjees exit, the NUJS asked the state government to nominate its member for the academic council and the executive council.
The Mamata government, however, decided to choose Suvaprasanna ar Mukherjees replacement thereby ruffling the feathers of the legal community.
In 1999,the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences was established under the WBNUJS Act. Three years later, its campus was set up in Salt Lake.
