STATE Transport Minister Madan Mitra’s arrest triggered violent protest in several parts of Kolkata on Friday. While a group of Trinamool supporters agitated at the CGO Complex that houses CBI headquarters in Salt Lake, another group blocked the main road at Bhawanipore in south Kolkata where Mitra resides.

Mitra’s younger son Som, along with his associates, too reached the CGO complex late in the evening. “We could not imagine that my father would be arrested this way. We are under immense pressure and my family is very upset with this act of the CBI,” Som Mitra told The Indian Express.

One of Mitra’s trusted aide claimed: “Dada called us after he was arrested. He said that senior CBI officers were chatting with him till 4 pm and then he was asked to leave. Dada came downstairs. Then he was called upstairs again and arrested. He was asked to call his family and give the news.”

Mitra, who left the CBI office at 8.40 pm, would be lodged at the Electronic Complex police station on Friday. The local police stations in Bidhannagar have already alerted to make all the necessary arrangements for Mitra’s stay.
