A sub-inspector,who committed suicide today at Baguiati on the northern outskirts of the city, has held the Deputy Commissioner of South Division of Kolkata Police D P Singh responsible for his death.
The body of Kartik Chatterjee, posted at the Park Street Police Station, was found hanging from the ceiling of the bathroom of his Vidya Pally residence this morning by his family members.
Two suicide notes have reportedly been recovered from his residence. In one suicide note addressed to his wife,Ruma,Chatterjee is learnt to have stated that he was abused and humiliated by the Deputy Commissioner and hence he was killing himself.
Chatterjee had joined the Park Street police station in February 2012 after he was transferred from the Chetla police station in South Kolkata.
When contacted,D P Singh said,I have no clue why he has taken my name in the suicide note. After he was transferred from Chetla police station to Park Street police station,he was asked several times by Chetla police station and the assistant commissioner of the area to send case diaries of 19 pending cases that he was investigating. However,he did not send them despite reminders.
When my attention was drawn to this,I called him twice but he did not turn up. I called him again in July but he appeared on August 3. I asked him to send all case diaries of the pending cases to Chetla police station in 20 days as the investigation of those cases was stalled. However,I never abused and insulted him, said Singh.
The sub-inspector was asked to appear before the DC,South, again on August 22,but he did not turn up on the day.
His wife Ruma said she was unaware of any tension his husband might be undergoing. She said he had gone to the bathroom at 9 am but when he did not come out for a long time, the family members broke open the door and found him hanging.
Rajiv Kumar,CP,Bidhanagar police commissionerate, who visited Chatterjee’s residence, said: The suicide notes have been recovered,we have started a probe into the case.
