Two days after TMC leader Sovan Chatterjee resigned as state housing and fire minister, he stepped down the post of Kolkata Mayor on Thursday. This was on expected lines as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had asked Chatterjee, her one-time trusted aide, to resign as Mayor on Tuesday. Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner Khalil Ahmed has been asked to oversee operations of the civic body.
Chatterjee sent his resignation letter to Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) chairperson Mala Roy and it has been accepted. The CM is slated to hold a TMC councillors meeting in the evening. “Received Sovan Chatterjee’s resignation from the post of mayor through his messenger. I have accepted it,” PTI quoted Roy as saying.
Chatterjee’s resignation from the Cabinet comes on the back of reports emerging that Banerjee was not happy with his performance as state minister as well as his marital discord, which had garnered unwarranted publicity. State minister Firhad Hakim will now look after the state housing and fire departments.
The signs of a friction between the TMC chief and Chatterjee had begun to show after the TMC leader was removed from the post of environment minister earlier this year. There were also allegations that Chatterjee was not taking his responsibilities seriously, either as a mayor or as a minister.
Another point of contention was that of his marital discord, which came out in the open once he filed a divorce petition at a city court. Chatterjee’s estranged wife Ratna Chatterjee alleged that the TMC leader was having an affair with a person named Baishakhi Banerjee and that was the reason behind his downfall.
“He was a dedicated worker until he met that woman. He willingly jumped into the fire and let everyone down. This is very unfortunate. We are still fighting our divorce petition in the court but I still love him. Some people just ruined his life,” she told reporters after Chatterjee’s resignation.
