Son of a veteran CPM leader and former MLA Bamapada Mukherjee was shot dead in Burnpur in Burdwan on Thursday. Arpan Mukherjee,50,who was also a CPM member, was on his way for a morning walk when unidentified group of people pumped bullets in his head.

The CPM has called for a 12-hour bandh in the area to protest the killing. “The local Trinamool leaders killed Arpan in a well planned manner. With this murder,12 comrades have been killed in the district since the Assembly election,” said CPM district secretary Amol Haldar.

“Locals later sieged Hirapur police station demanding the arrest of those responsible for the crime,” he added.

Police said that no arrest has been made so far and the investigation is on. “We have found five empty cartridges from the crime spot,” said a senior police officer.

Commissioner of Police Ajai Nand said that Arpan was not a politically important person in the area. “The body has been sent for an autopsy. He was shot thrice. However,he was not politically important in the area.”

Locals said that Arpan, who was a contractor, was targeted to terrorize those associated with him and CPM so as to increase the business interest of local leaders belonging to the Trinamool Congress.
