Social activists back midday meal workers’ stir
Issuing a public statement, a group of activists said that there are serious lapses in the implementation of the scheme in the state, leading to a number of major problems.
Representational Image Intellectuals and activists on Sunday expressed solidarity with the midday meal workers who have been protesting in Kolkata for better wages and other benefits.
Issuing a public statement, a group of activists said that there are serious lapses in the implementation of the scheme in the state, leading to a number of major problems.
“At present, the per-student fund allocation for the programme is a meagre Rs 5.45 at the primary level and Rs 8.17 at the upper primary level (excluding the rice, which is being supplied by the Food Corporation of India)… Secondly, remuneration paid to the midday meal workers is far less than the government-declared minimum wage. On average, a worker receives not more than Rs 20-25 against the hard work she needs to do to prepare and serve the food,” read the statement.
Those who signed the statement included Ashok Gangopadhyay (retired Judge), Ashok Sarkar (professor), Binayak Sen (social activist), Biplab Bandyopadhyay and others.
