Bodies of six persons of a family a couple and their four daughters aged 1,5,8 and 10 were recovered from a guesthouse room at Tarapith in Birbhum on Thursday.
The couple, said a police officer, appeared to have entered into a suicide pact and fed food laced with pesticides to the children on Wednesday night before they ate the same food.
A suicide note and an empty bottle of pesticide have been recovered from the room.
Sources said the couple had registered their name as Bijoy Mishra,46,and Kalindi Mishra,39, and gave Kaminchawk in Bihar as their address at the hotel. The couple originally belonged to Surat in Gujrat, added the sources. They had checked in at the hotel on December 24.
The suicide note states the couple took the step as they were suffering from acute financial crisis. They have written that nobody was responsible for their death, added the police officer.
A cleaner of the guesthouse spotted the bodies when he went inside the room after his knocks at the door went unanswered.
We are trying to contact their relatives in Bihar. We are also trying to find out about any foul play in the incident. We are in touch with the Bihar Police, said Birbhum Superintendent of Police C Sudhakar,
