Satyamev Jayate team in Kamduni

Shot in arm for movement seeking justice for rape and murder victim

The protest movement in Kamduni over the alleged rape and murder of a college girl got a shot in the arm Wednesday after a three-member team of the popular TV show,Satyamev Jayate, visited the village in North 24 Parganas. The show, hosted by actor Aamir Khan,is set to return with its second season and the issue of the brutal rape and murder of the 20-year-old girl would be raised in one of the episodes to be aired in September.

The team shot some sequences at the spot where the alleged rape took place on June 7. It later interviewed Tumpa Kayal and Mausumi Kayal, the two women who had led the protest movement and also Pradeep Mukherjee, the headmaster of a government Primary School who had been at the receiving end for participating in a protest rally. The team later visited the victim’s house and talked to her family members.

The team’s three-hour stay in the village was part of a research for the television show, but for the villagers, who have remained stuck to their ground refusing all help from the government,it has come as booster shot.

“We have left no stone unturned but the movement did not yield desired result. We are happy that the movement has now reached to a national level, attracting the attention of the Satyamev Jayate’s team. Now we will continue the protests with a renewed vigour,” the victim’s brother said.

Tumpa Kayal later said they have requested Aamir Khan to visit the village. “The team asked us about the incident and how we have carried on with the movement so far. I told them the whole story and requested that if Aamir Khan visited our village once,it will take our protest to every household of the country,” she said.

A team member, reportedly told the villagers that one of them will be taken to the studio in Mumbai when the programme would be shot with Aamir.

Meanwhile,Mausumi Kayal said the interest shown by the TV team was much welcome as it was devoid of any political colour. “We have continued so far without any political intervention. Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate is definitely one of the best tools to take our movement to the national level,” she said.

Contacted,Headmaster,Pradeep Mukherjee said the TV team had informed him on July 25 about their visit. “They met me on Tuesday at Bhabani Bhavan, when I went there in connection with the investigation process. There Aamir had talked to me over the phone as well. I feel this would be a huge step as we fight for justice,” he said.
