A 31-year-old man allegedly tried to rape a Class XII girl and then set her on fire after she reportedly rejected his advances. The alleged incident took place in Kashi Mondal Lane in Belur, Howrah.

The accused, Md Imtiaz alias Lala, is a resident of Votebagan. According to a complaint lodged by the girl’s uncle, Imtiaz went to the girl’s house house at 8.30 am and tried to rape her. When she resisted, he allegedly doused her with kerosene, which he was carrying in a small bottle, and set her on fire before fleeing.

The 18-year-old girl lives with her mother, who works at private firm and was away at the time. Neighbours who heard her screams came and saw her in flames. They rushed her to Tulsiram Lakshmi Devi Jaiswal Hospital, where doctors said she had suffered about 30 per cent burns.

Police said the victim had ended her relationship with the accused a year ago. Since then, he had been harassing her. About 10 days ago, he allegedly threatened to throw acid on her if she did not marry him.

Police said the victim’s uncle has filed a written complaint at Belur police station. “A case has been registered and several sections have been slapped against the accused. He is absconding at the moment. We are conducting regular raids and will arrest him soon,” said Nishat Parvez, DC (HQ), Howrah Police Commissionerate.
