THE state election commission has asked the state government to reconsider the clubbing of districts for the three-phase panchayat elections. Sources said the commission has sent a letter to the government in this regard.
Meanwhile, the SEC,responding to the request from various political parties to change the date of third phase of polling, scheduled on Juy 10,has agreed to hold it on July 9. The date was changed,as the Ratha Yatra festival is on July 10.
Panchayat minister Subrata Mukherjee confirmed having received the letter. We received a letter from the SEC in which the commission has raised some objections to the clubbing of districts. We will discuss the issue with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and there can be discussions with SEC on the matter.
Mukherjee, however, confirmed that the date for the third phase of polling would be changed. The date for the third phase will be changed as several districts in Bengal celebrate Rathayatra festival in a big way. The government is likely to fix the date of the third phase of poll on July 9.
The SEC today held a meeting with SPs and DMs of nine districts. A meeting with DMs and SPs of the other districts will be held tomorrow.
It has been learnt that commissioner Meera Pandey directed the district administration to start preparation for the polls and look into the law and order situation in the districts without waiting for a SEC notification. The commission is said to have directed the administration of three border districts, including Nadia,Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas,to beef up security at the border.
