The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) today said it was ready to face an inquiry if NDA presidential candidate P A Sangma went to court to challenge the authenticity of the signature of UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee in his resignation from the ISI tendered on June 20.
The BJP had alleged that the signature on Mukherjees resignation at ISI was different from that in his nomination form filed with the Election Commission. Yesterday BJP spokesperson Ananth Kumar said that the signature was fabricated and they would move the court to challenge it. There are three things related to the issue: when Pranabbabu tendered his resignation, whether he was holding the office of profit, and whether his signature in the resignation is authentic, Bimal Roy,ISI director, told The Indian Express at his office at Baranagar near Kolkata.
He explained: On June 20,we received Mukherjees resignation with the signature that he uses as chairman of the ISI Council. If they go to court and handwriting experts or forensic experts are called,we are ready to face it. Of course, the signature of Pranabbabu on his resignation is different from that which he uses at other places. But many people use two different signatures, particularly for signing cheques. The signature on his resignation is the one he has used for the last four years that he has been chairman of the council. Roy added,So far as the allegation of his holding an office of profit at ISI is concerned,he never got a single paisa as remuneration or any other honorium from here.
S S Ahluwalia, spokesperson for Sangma, said,There are two sets of signatures of Mukherjee and we have requested for a clarification. The returning officer has given some reasons for the cancellation of our petition challenging Mukherjees candidature and we will look into them. The West Bengal unit of the BJP,led by its president Rahul Sinha, will hold a protest rally in front of ISI tomorrow.
