The Kolkata Police claim to have cracked the Park Street rape case with the arrest of two persons from Howrah station on Saturday. They said the accused fabricated their identities while befriending women at night clubs.

The arrested men have reportedly confessed to be involved in the rape of the 37-year-old woman in a moving car while she was returning from a nightclub on February 5; the key offender is,however. absconding.

Accused Sumit Bajaj,a 21-year-old from a business family in Gariahat, had posed as one Luvi Gidwani before the woman, said Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Damayanti Sen. The other arrested is Nishad Alam aka Tusi aka Ruman Khan,a resident of Beniapukur,is in leather business.

The woman had named and identified Luvi Gidwani as one of the accused. Police, however, found that Gidwani was in Canada since January 2,while the other accused named by the woman, too, had perfect alibis. This prompted them to say there were ‘inconsistencies’ in the woman’s statement.

The woman, who lodged a police complaint four days after the incident, had also taken the names of Sharafat Ali,Azhar and Salman whom she had claimed to have tracked down on social networking site Facebook.

Today’s breakthrough came after scrutiny of the footage of CCTVs inside the nightclub, the Park Hotel entrance and its lobby by forensic experts. Threat calls from some of the accused also helped the police track them down. The two were arrested while they were trying to escape from Kolkata, said Sen.

The clothes that the two were wearing on the day of the crime have been seized, said the police. The Honda car in which the crime was committed, too, has been impounded.
