TENSION PREVAILED at the R G Kar Medical College hostel located in Manicktala after students’ union wings of various political parties gathered outside the complex under Amherst Street police station on Wednesday night to protest against alleged political interference over allotment of hostel beds. While the police managed to intervene and bring the situation under control for now, the All India Democratic Student’s Organisation (AIDSO) of SUCI, said they will continue the protest until the issue is resolved.
According to sources, R G Kar Medical College has two hostels, one within the college premises and the other in Manicktala. Until 2011, there was a committee responsible for allotting hostel beds. Later, student unions started taking control of the entire process, sources added.
“The fight between unions over allotment of beds is nothing new. There are around 120 beds in the second hostel, of which 15 are reserved for those who come through the All-India medical examination, while 32 beds are allotted to students of their choice by DSO. TMCP has control over the rest of the beds,” said a third-year student.
Meanwhile, AIDSO president Sudhendu Mullick alleged that the TMC has taken control over the official hostel allotment process.
“There is a political nexus between the college authority and TMCP. There was no public notice or distribution of the forms for hostel allotment. Suddenly a list of students was out with beds allotted to them in the two hostels. Why there was no public notice?” Mullick told The Indian Express.
A DSO representative also alleged that several illegal boarders have been staying in the hostel for years, making it difficult for meritorious students to get beds. “We are demanding for a fresh list of students who have been allotted hostel beds without being politically influenced. If no action is taken in 2-3 days, we might resort to a large scale protest,” said a member of the DSO union.
Denying the allegations, principal of R G Kar Medical College, Sudhhadhan Batabyal, said, “The allotment of hostel beds is a transparent process decided on the basis of certain criteria. We give priority to students coming from other states and then move on to those from districts. They (DSO) are merely giving this a political colour.”
