A psychiatrist and a mental counsellor from the SSKM Hospital on Friday visited Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh — arrested in the Saradha scam case — at the Presidency Correctional Home in Kolkata.
The counsellor and psychiatrist were part of a three-member team of doctors that visited Ghosh. Sources said officials from the Presidency Correctional Home on Friday informed SSKM that Ghosh’s behaviour was turning “unusual and at times violent”. The jail authority reportedly requested the doctors to examine Ghosh to determine if he was suffering from “acute depression”. “Ghosh has been unnecessarily shouting on the jail staff. He remains agitated most of the time. Thus, we thought that he may be suffering from depression,” said a jail official. However, the doctors who visited Ghosh, claimed that he was not suffering from any mental illness.
Sources close to Ghosh, meanwhile, claimed that it was a ploy of the state government to show that Ghosh was suffering from some mental illness.
A couple of days ago, Ghosh had claimed that he has received some “new information” about senior Trinamool leadership and requested the CBI to record his statement. Accordingly, his statement was recorded. When contacted, state Minister for Correctional Services H A Swafi said he was not aware of the doctors meeting Ghosh. A few days ago, Ghosh was admitted to the jail hospital with a chest congestion. A jail official said the government does not want to take a chance, as Ghosh had already attempted suicide a month ago.
