Abhijit Mukherjee,Congress MP and son of President Pranab Mukherjee,called on RJD supremo Lalu Prasad in a Ranchi jail Sunday,catching his party unawares,which later expressed shock and surprise over the development.
The Jangipur MP met Lalu at the Birsa Munda Central Jail where the former Bihar chief minister is lodged after being convicted in a fodder scam case.
Abhijit,who was on his way to the temple town of Rajrappa,also met Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. he,however,refused to comment when asked about the reason behind his visit.

Meanwhile,Junior rail minister Adhir Ranjan Choudhury,the Congress MP from Berhampore in Murshidabad who played a key role in getting both Pranab and later Abhijit elected from Jangipur,said he was unaware of the MP’s visit.
Are you sure Pranabda’s son met Lalu in Ranchi? Chaudhury asked. He,however,added Abhijit might have gone there in his personal capacity.
West Bengal Pradesh Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya was shocked. Why did he meet Lalu? I cant understand what is happening. The PCC does not take any responsibility (of Abhijit meeting Lalu), Bhattacharya said talking to The Indian Express.
State Congress spokesman Abdul Mannan came to know of Abhijits visit from news channels. Big people have big agenda. Abhijit must have met Lalu on a personal basis, he said.
Pradyot Guha,a personal aide to President who is now in Kolkata,was also in dark. Abhijit did not confide in me why he went there, said Guha,who will move to Mirati,Pranabs ancestral village in Birbhum on October 9,on the eve of the Presidents visit there
The President will be staying in his village for three days,from October 10 to October 13, to take part in the family Durga Puja. Abhijit will in the village ahead of his fathers visit to oversee the preparations.
Earier,Abhijit had hit the headlines for his controversial remark on women protesters in the Delhi gangrape case.
