The State Election Commission (SEC) on Thursday told the Calcutta High Court that campaigning for the panchayat polls in the state has been disrupted by threats and intimidation.
The SEC submitted an affidavit in connection with the petition filed by the Congress alleging that its nominees were debarred from filing nomination by ruling Trinamool Congress cadres. The SEC blamed the state government for not providing adequate security forces during the nomination process that ended on June 19.
Justice Sanjib Banerjee adjourned the hearing till next Tuesday as related issues of panchayat election will be heard by a Division Bench next Monday.
The SEC stated that during the nomination process,it requested the government to deploy 32,150 security personnel in 17 districts for area domination and confidence-building measures. However,it stated, only 3,883 forces were deployed.
