Thousands of research students enrolled in PhD courses across various universities in the state are up in arms against the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The researchers are demanding relaxation from appearing in entrance exams for the post of assistant professor, much like the students who would enroll in the PhD programme under the new regulations of the UGC. As per the new notification in July 2009,the UGC has asked all the universities in the country to exempt only those PhD degree holders from appearing in the National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Eligibility Test (SET) who have enrolled in the PhD as per the new regulations.
Students said the universities are saying that they will go by whatever the UGC will recommend. The UGC has formed a committee headed by former Vice-Chancellor of Madras University Professor Thyagrajan to look into the cases of students who are undergoing the PhD degree as per old system.
