He may have built his career on talent and hard work, but it goes without saying that Lady Luck has been kind to Farhan Akhtar

Come to think of it,the phenomenon called Farhan Akhtar was waiting to happen. A product of Bollywood, who stands for everything that is right with the industry and devoid of everything that is wrong,Akhtar is an anomaly. An anomaly who came to the scene with Dil Chahta Hai,when we were all ready to write Bollywood off. “I try and focus on the task in hand,” says Akhtar, who was in the city to promote his latest film,Luck By Chance,at the Cinemax multiplex. Last year,Akhtar debuted as an actor and a singer and a talk show host, which adds to the repertoire of the director, lyricist and producer. The film gives him a chance to don one more cap, that of a good brother. He surrenders himself as an actor to his sister,Zoya Akhtar,in her directorial debut. “It’s Zoya’s baby. She has nursed the project for six years,” he says. So has he been an indulgent producer to his sister? “I’m also the producer of the film, which means I have to be careful about the finances. But I firmly believe that a film is a director’s vision and he or she is the captain of the ship. That was the spirit of this film too,” says Akhtar.

Last year also saw the debut of Akhtar as a talk show host in Oye its Friday. “I’m still not quite used to being in the front of the camera,so,at times that comes across in the show,” smiles Akhtar, who is known to be a shy person. “I know that I have to project my work in the best possible manner and I’m trying to do that,” he adds.

His directorial career seems to have taken a back seat,at least for the time being. Voice from the Sky,his magnum opus which was to be partly shot in Kolkata, has been delayed. “It’s a period film and there is a lot of money involved. With global recession we are taking things easy right now,” he says. His sequel to Don will have to wait for Shah Rukh Khan’s dates (who is shooting Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan in the US now) and the summer months. “Don 2 is a summer film. It needs to be shot in the summer months,” he asserts.

As of now,it seems,it’s time to get lucky for Mr Akhtar.
