RANJIT Shil,Trinamool Congress councillor for ward 133,was today elected chairman of borough 15. The post was previously held by Mohammad Iqbal alias Munna, who was arrested in the Garden Reach college violence case a month ago.
Significantly,Shil had been in charge of student elections at Harimohan Ghosh College in Garden Reach, where a sub-inspector was shot dead during a clash between rival groups in the run-up to the filing of nomination papers on February 12.
While Munna was arrested,Shils name never figured in the FIR. Shil, like Munna,is a close associate of Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim,Trinamool sources said.
On March 30,Shil was declared the only candidate in the election for chairman, which meant that all the TMC votes were in his favour. Today, the results revealed that Shil had got six votes from nine councillors. Borough 15 consists of nine councillors seven TMC and two CPM. Since Munna, councillor for ward 134,is in jail custody, all six TMC votes went in favour of Shil.
I was never involved in the Garden Reach incident. I was not present in the area, Shil today said after his election.
