On way home for Pujas,nine die in accident

Nine persons were killed and seven others seriously injured after the matador in which they were travelling collided with a truck on National Highway 117 near Kakdweep in South 24-Parganas on early Friday morning.

Nine persons were killed and seven others seriously injured after the matador in which they were travelling collided with a truck on National Highway 117 near Kakdweep in South 24-Parganas on early Friday morning.

Two of the nine died on the spot and seven others succumbed to their injuries later.

According to the police,all the victims were residents of Gopalnagar in Pathar Pratima block and worked in a rice mill in Burdwan. They were returning to their village for Puja vacation. The incident took place when one of the rear wheels of matador got punctured and the driver lost control. The vehicle skidded off the road and rammed into rammed into a truck coming from the opposite direction.

After coming to know about the incident,locals immediately rushed the victims to a nearby hospital. Fourteen of the injured were at first taken to Kakdweep Hospital where four of them succumbed to their injuries. Later,the rest of the victims were shifted to Diamond Harbour Sub-Divisional Hospital where three were declared dead on arrival. “We have impounded both the vehicles but the drivers fled,” said L N Meena,SP South 24-Parganas.
