AFTER several rounds of tough discussions with the state government, the state election commission has decided to issue a parallel notification on panchayat polls on May 27.
For the first phase of the elections, scheduled for July 2,the DMs of the nine districts will issue the notifications in their respective districts on May 29. Filing of nominations will begin the very same day and end on June 5. For the second (July 6) and third phase (July 9),filing of nominations will take place between June 3-10 in four districts and June 5-12 in the remaining four districts respectively.
The decision to issue the notification next week it was earlier slated for Friday came after the meeting with Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee and ADG (Law and Order) Banibrata Basu remained inconclusive today. The security issue remained the irritant. The government representatives came to us after we sent them a letter last night stating our requirements for the security. They returned with what we had to say. Now,they will discuss the matter with the government and revert to us on Monday, when we will issue the notification, said secretary of the commission Tapas Ray.
According to Ray,there would be a requirement of about 1,43,000 armed and unarmed forces for the polling stations alone in all the three phases. Of the total 57,000 odd booths,69.97 per cent have been marked as sensitive and high sensitive ones.
The state has about 55,700 armed and unarmed forces and it will need additional 20,000 personnel. The state has written to the Assam government for additional forces.
