Not allowed to defend himself,Cong leader detained

The Speaker announced the punishment after Ghosh was summoned to the bar of the House at 2.30 pm. Ghosh was not allowed to make any statement in his defence.

Congress leader Arunava Ghosh was Tuesday held guilty of breach of privilege of Assembly for making “derogatory remarks against Speaker Biman Banerjee” and was sentenced to “detention till adjournment of the House”.

The Speaker announced the punishment after Ghosh was summoned to the bar of the House at 2.30 pm. Ghosh was not allowed to make any statement in his defence.

Ghosh was released a little after 5 pm from custody. Following this Congress members staged a walkout from the Assembly. Members of the lawyers’ cell of the Congress also staged a demonstration at the north gate of the Assembly.

After his release Ghosh,Bar Council member of Calcutta High Court,said he was looking at all legal options on how to seek redressal for what was done to him.

“I was hanged before I got an opportunity to defend myself. Had West Bengal been not in India, (Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee would have sent me to gas chamber,” Ghosh told reporters.
